How to Keep Your Decorating Project From Costing Too Much Money
by Aurelia
Decorating your home used to be really simple-all you had to do was hire a professional decorator. There are a few people out there who still do this. For the rest of us, decorating our homes is something that we see as unaffordable. Give it some thought: how many of your friends live in houses or apartments that aren’t decorated because they think that decorating is too expensive? The good news is that there are plenty of ways you can decorate without going over budget. This article has some tips for quick decorating at affordable prices.

Don’t fall off the deep end with your decorating. Start with the basics. Don’t try to cram your home with decoration; choose a few decorative pieces that you truly love and then grow your decorating scheme around them. Instead of buying up everything that you think will look good save your money for a few quality pieces that you truly love.

If you go to fast to soon you’ll be more likely to feel the “redecorating itch.” When you work slowly to build your collection you will have more appreciation for each decorative piece you purchase. Working slowly helps you to make sure that you put together a solid decorating scheme. Put up some new paint. The key to repainting your home is to choose neutral tones for most of the home and then to use bolder colors as accent pieces. Neutral tones on walls make it easier to decorate because you don’t have to worry about other decorating elements clashing. Choosing a single wall for a bold shade is also a good idea (if the rest of your walls are in neutral tones). This is called making an “accent” wall. Accent walls are cheap to make (they rarely use a lot of paint) and you can paint them yourself in an afternoon! Accent walls are great because if you change your mind about the color it can easily be changed.

Use your imagination! There are plenty of things in your home that can be repurposed to be decorative. Hanging the pots and pans on the wall in your kitchen is a great way to create kitchen decorations and save you valuable minutes when it is time to cook something. You won’t have to worry about being able to find the pan you need-it will be right there on the wall!

This was Julia Child’s favorite way to use her kitchen ware. What about that quilt that has been handed down to you from your grandmother? Wouldn’t it make a great wall hanging? Quilts are great for adding charm to any home-even when they are used for something besides a bedspread. Decorating with regularly used things can be a great way to save money.

Quite a few people find that, once they start decorating, the things they want the most are pretty easy to find. Just take some time and let yourself be creative. Empty walls can be just as, if not more, beautiful than a wall crammed full of art.

Store bought art is fine, but sometimes the decorations you make yourself are even better! Don’t rush-give yourself time to think about the decorations you want most. The only people that benefit from your rushing to decorate are the people who sell you the decorations.
