Proper Gutter Cleaning Technique
by Jonathan Sparks
Gutters and downspouts that aren’t serviced can lead to serious damage to property. Fortunately, keeping them clean isn’t a difficult process and just a bit of attention to them can go a long way in saving you money. Here are a couple of ways that will keep your gutter clean during every season no matter what model you have installed on your property.
One of the most effective ways to clean a gutter is to remove loose debris that has been trapped in it. You should start at the drain outlets and work away from them. This can be done with a regular garden trowel and will get rid of many of the difficulties of gutter cleaning denver, especially if performed frequently. Use a stepladder instead of an extension ladder when you are doing this in order to prevent damage to the gutter from occurring as a result of bending due to the pressure being placed on it.
If you have only an extension ladder available to you then you can set a 2×4 inside of the gutter to keep it sturdy while you carry out the maintenance. The best time to scoop out debris is when the material in the gutter is somewhat damp but neither dry nor soggy. This ensures that it will not break up as you are trying to take it out and require different denver gutter cleaning techniques to be applied.
However, when additional cleaning is necessary you may wish to use a hose to wash out the excess material. You can attach a high-pressure nozzle to the end of the hose and work toward the drain outlet in order to this quickly. Remember that this process is usually messy and if you aren’t careful you will have to scrub mud off of your house with a brush.
It’s also important to clear out any obstructions in the drainpipes. You will be able to notice if the drainpipes are clogged if water is not flowing through them easily. The best method to clearing them is to flush them out with a hose. If this isn’t effective then using a plumber’s auger to pull the debris out from the base will yield better results.
Of course there is no better way to keep gutter cleaning to a minimum than by purchasing a system that will catch debris and filter it from water. There are many different model types that are manufactured based on their purpose as well as price range. A gutter guard for example can be mounted easily with screws and will use a downward slope design to ensure that debris does not get trapped.
Another option available is called a drop-in model. These are installed easily because their edges can slide in the gutter lip without any screws or clips that take time to apply and fasten. They utilize a durable aluminum or copper mesh that can withstand heavy material without breaking or collapsing under pressure. The drop-in designs are also unnoticeable from the ground which means that you can keep the appearance of your home in good standing.
The dispersal systems are popular as well, known for their self-cleaning properties that keep gutters free of buildup that may lead to erosion. These replace the gutters completely and are among the more expensive methods of property protection available. You should keep in mind that while systems such as these are great at reducing the amount of cleaning needed, most are not a full solution to the problem and occasional inspections will be required for them to work properly.
