How To Install A Popcorn Ceiling Yourself!

To put up a popcorn ceiling is about as hard as to put a popcorn bag in the oven and wait for few minutes until you can eat it. Of course you cannot eat the ceiling popcorn, but well, I guess you got the point. One of the downsides to ceiling popcorn is that yes, it is true that it is extremely easy to install, but in few years the easy application will take its toll and the popcorn can start to look very old and not so nice anymore. In this case the good thing is that installing the ceiling popcorn is so simple and therefore also the removal does not take a lot of effort.
Preparation steps to make ceiling popcorn
1) First of all you have to repair all the cracks and small openings in your ceiling with a spackling compound. Afterwards just cover it with a small coat of primer and then let it try for at least four hours until you move on to the following steps.
2) The next step is to make sure that everything else in the room is protected from smudges and anything else that might spill from the installation. Some cloth is a good way to protect your things as the texture sprayer can create a notable mess in you room.
3) Hopefully you have rented or have a personal paint suit which also covers your head and a pair of safety glasses. These are all essential to keep you clean from the texture sprays.

4) You have to find a huge bucket to put the texture mix in and then use your paint mixer to blend the mixture like the package tells you to. When the mixture looks just thick enough (like thick porridge) you are done mixing it and can start the application process. .
5) Now you have to put the mixture in the hopper gun and start the compressor. First of all, have a small try run of few shots on a piece of cardboard or something like than before you take your first shot of the ceiling. It is to make sure that you know how to use that particular gun that you are holding as they might be a bit different from each other.
6) So when you finally get to apply the mixture to the ceiling try to spay it as lightly as possible and do not stop in just one place but keep moving as otherwise you might pile too much of the mixture on one place. The goal is not to do all of it in just one coat. Actually if you apply multiple coats and let the mixture try in between the results will be better. If you spray too much of the mixture at once it will not attach to the ceiling and will drip off which means that you have to do everything once again.
Removing the ceiling popcorn
Taking the ceiling popcorn down when you have gotten tired of it is also pretty easy. All you have to do is to spray a small area of the ceiling with water, wait for about 30 seconds and then tackle the texture with a knife.
You should be able to take down the popcorn by applying a little pit of pressure to the knife, but if it does not work that easily than just add a little bit of more water. But remember to be careful when adding water so that you would not make the popcorn too wet. That might cause the popcorn to tear down your drywall paper and of course you do not want to have to replace all of that with a new drywall paper.
One more thing to keep in mind when taking down the popcorn ceiling is that make sure that you wear safety glasses and also wear a mask in front of your eyes as you should not breathe in the dust and the fumes that are created with removing the popcorn.
Of course just covering your face is not enough, just to be on the safe side you should also wear a protective suit. And to make your life easier take a bucket up the latter with you when you start to take down the popcorn to catch it in the bucket. You should also use plastic sheets to protect the rest of your room, just to make the cleaning easier afterwards.
