How to Prepare Your Garden Beds For Spring
By Mlynch43. Spring is a time when some of us begin to turn our thoughts to gardening. We may have plans for a vegetable garden and or a flower garden to enhance the beauty of our home. With a little advanced planning and preparation we can greatly increase our chances of having a productive and beautiful garden throughout the entire growing season. Below are some basic steps you can take to prepare your garden for the growing season.
1.)The first step is to rake up any usable mulch to the side. Leave the decaying pieces in place. Remove and growing weeds by the roots to help insure they won’t return.
2.)Add about two inch layer of organic material over the beds. This would be a good time to apply some fertilizer as well so it can begin to break down into the soil prior to planting. Use your shovel to turn everything in and to loosen the soil up. You can also start planting your spring bulbs at this pont.
3.)Put your mulch back and add some fresh new mulch to make up for what has been lost. Water the bed thoroughly. Give the beds about two weeks for the newly applied fertilizer to break down and you’re ready to start planting. Doing this each year will insure your garden soil stays rich and loose and you will see the marked improvement in the results results for your efforts.
