How to Plant and Care For English Ivy
1.) Ideally the soil for English Ivys should be well drained since wet soil can cause problems for the plant, particularly in winter. Add a layer of sand and organic matter to planting area to improve drainage and improve moisture retention. English Ivy’s don’t like wet soggy soil. Drought can be harmful to, hence the addition of the organic matter.
2.) English Ivy is easily propagated from cuttings. Plant your cuttings about 6 – 8 deep and about 10 inches apart. Water thoroughly and regularly if there is no rain. Do not fertilize at this time.
3.) After about two months, when the new plants have taken root and began to grow you can begin fertilizing. A good water soluble fertilizer like Miracle grow is an excellent choice. Apply monthly during the growing season.
4.) You can help reduce insect and disease problems by keeping the plants properly watered. If some insects do show up you can use an insecticidal soap to control them.
5.) Controlling the English Ivy is easily accomplished with an occasional pruning or just pulling up a portion of the vine that has begun to grow in an unwanted location. When used as a ground cover you can mow over the plant when it has aged and thinned to encourage new growth and lush growth again.
