Jehovah’s Witnesses – Achieving A Better Understanding

by: John Scott

Jehovah’s Witnesses Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom is a 750 page book that is published by Jehovah’s Witnesses which gives a detailed history of the history of the organization and organizational structure, various schools, assemblies and programs, literature, a section on the history of the persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses, as well as problems, difficulties, and errors, within the organization itself. This reference work is very detailed and complete, as well as very accurate, and includes a six page detail of chronological history dating from 1870 to 1992.

It contains 33 chapters as well as a 4-page Index.

While some in reviewing this book on online places have criticized it for presenting a “whitewashed” version of the real story, in fact, this book, even though it was written by Jehovah’s Witnesses themselves, it does not gloss over or omit problems which have been experienced during the modern history of Jehovah’s Witnesses which goes back around 140 years, but presents an honest account of even the weaker areas and of the organization in addition to providing a positive and factual synopsis of the religious roots and integrity of tens of thousand who have been persecuted for their faith.

It seems, in reading these criticisms of Jehovah’s Witnesses Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom, in their detail, that it is likely that these critics hadn’t read the book in commenting, but are pretty die-hard opposers of Jehovah’s Witnesses who assumed that the book is presented in a whitewashed form. This is in actuality not the case. What might be missing is a negative attitude, rather, the book presents the facts in a balanced, positive and non-judgmental manner.

Historical photos and illustrations are included in Jehovah’s Witnesses, Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom, as well as a page of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses at that time in 1992. Only two of these members remain, the rest have died in that time period.

For anyone doing research on the subject of Jehovah’s Witnesses or has questions about the religion, which is in fact a Christian religion, of the organization, how it functions, the meetings of Jehovah’s Witnesses, assemblies, or its structure, and for anyone who wants to know the history of Jehovah’s Witnesses, this is about as complete a work as is out there, honest and factual. It is a good book for any researches on the subject to obtain.

One note on Jehovah’s Witnesses and the idea presented here that they are in fact a Christian religion. Jehovah’ s Witnesses believe, as the Bible teaches, that Jesus Christ is the only-begotten Son of God. That he gave his life for mankind, and that by his blood we gain forgiveness of our sins. What they do not believe is that Jesus is part of some mysterious Trinity. This, they reject as being unbiblical, the word Trinity is not found in the Bible, and there is some serious “twisting of the scriptures” to try to prove that Jesus is part of the Trinity by Trinitarians.

The Trinity only became an official teaching of the church, after much debate and dissension, at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD, close to 300 years after Jesus died, when the Church had already started to become corrupt and political. The Jews preceding Jesus, and the early Christians had no concept in their worship of a Trinity, rather they worshipped and prayed to Yahew who Moses described under inspiration as being “one” not three. Additionally, Jesus said that “the Father is greater than I am,” at John 14:28, and the Apostle Paul reiterated this thought at 1 Corinthians 11:3, where God is referred to as the head of Jesus in the same way that the man is the head of the woman and that Jesus is the head of man.

Only God had no beginning or end, whereas Jesus is said to have had a beginning, being the “firstborn of all creation”. Colossians 1:16,17.

Jehovah’s Witnesses pray to God always in the “name of Jesus” as the Bible and Jesus himself instructs. Jehovah’s Witnesses have Bible based books, that instruct on nothing else but the Bible-Jesus and his teachings. Jehovah’s Witnesses not only have Jesus on their lips, but endeavor to follow Jesus as well, obeying his commandments, and trying to imitate him. In the religion of Jehovah’s Witnesses, as Frank S. Mead positively noted in his book on religious denominations in the United States, in the religion of Jehovah’s Witnesses, “everyone is a missionary”. Jehovah’s Witnesses preach in their congregation, but also imitate first century Christians and Jesus himself by preaching publicly “and from house to house,” while still providing for their own material needs by working secularly.

Jehovah’s Witnesses, Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom is a through, well researched and balanced book, and for anyone who might have questions about Jehovah’s Witnesses, this book can help one to put things in their proper context, which sometimes opposers fail to do, misquoting, or taking teachings and practices of Jehovah’s Witnesses out of context. Jehovah’s Witnesses are a true Christian religion, and try to follow and obey Jesus teaching of love, as Jesus said, “By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.”

“This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14, Jesus Christ.
