How to Clean Clothing Grease (Kitchen) Stains – Safely

by: Tara Aronson

If grease stains are a frequent part of your culinary experience, treat the spattered clothes as you would a sinkful of grimy dishes - with a hand dishwashing liquid.

Because it's designed to break up surface grit and allow it to rinse away, it's uniquely qualified to do the same for clothes.

For best results, you'll want to treat spills and splatters as soon as possible - don't let the gooey splatters solidify in the hamper overnight.

Place the garment stain side down on white paper towels. (Print or colored towels may further stain clothes.) Squirt a dime-size amount of dishwashing liquid on the backside of the stain. Give it a minute or so to work its breakdown magic.

Rinse under warm to hot running water for a minute or so. The water temperature will depend on what the fabric can handle. For 100 percent cotton, you can usually use hot water.

Now would be the time to try a spray and wash-type product if you have one, following the label's directions.

Better yet, just pour a little detergent directly onto the area and allow to soak for a minute or two.

Full-strength detergent is a terrific pre-treater and cuts down on washday bottle clutter. Follow this with a spin in your washer using the hottest water that's safe for the fabric.

Before placing the item in the dryer, inspect the formerly greasy area. If you can still see any residue, repeat the pre-treating and washing process until clear.
